Every now and then, we’ll get a customer who is using a kitchen cabinet base as a bathroom vanity. There’s nothing wrong with doing this, especially if you have the space in the bathroom. One issue you might run into is with the granite. Nowadays, you can find bathroom vanity tops that are prefabricated to standard bathroom vanity depth that are really affordable. The problem with a 24” cabinet base is, how can you make a 22” depth vanity top work with a 24” cabinet base? It can be done. My motto is to always think outside the box and make it work.
The first thing you’ll want to do is add some reinforcement near the back of the cabinet at 21”. This will support the back edge of the 22” vanity top. See figure 1.
Next, you’ll want to create your raised backsplash. This is where you can get creative. You want to frame out approximately a 3” depth ledge. The height is up to you, but typical backsplash is 4”. This can be something that can be covered in an accent tile, or you can use that same surface as your vanity top. Be creative and make it cohesive with the rest of the bathroom project. See figure 2.
Once that’s done, all you have to do is set your vanity top and finish off your raised backsplash detail.
